5 TIPS TO STAY ACTIVE AND BE FIT

Staying active can be challenging for many people. Don’t worry, you are not alone. To step out of the habit of being lazy, not working out, and making excuses, I have come up with 5 tips that I believe are a necessity to staying active AND being fit:

1. Make a schedule.

I noticed when I have a set time or day(s) that I plan to workout, I end up getting the job done. When I don’t have plans, I usually end up sitting at home all day watching Netflix, eating junk food. By the end of these lazy days, my body feels icky, and I always regret it. So, my tip to you is to make a PLAN to workout. You can write in in a planner or write it on a To Do List. It is so simple and motivates you to accomplish what you want to do.

2. Drink LOTS of water.

Water is such an essential part of everyone’s day. 8 cups of water should be the MINIMUM amount. I drink water right after waking up in the morning and right before going to bed. This ensures that I am falling asleep hydrating my body and waking up to rehydrate after a long night of rest. Throughout the day I keep my water bottle with me at all times which helps in being a constant reminder to drink. There are some people who don’t like the taste of water; a solution is to add lemon (a natural detox for the body) or a powder like Crystal Light.

3. Don’t starve yourself.

When going on a diet, many people think “Okay, I am not going to eat a lot today. I’ll just skip breakfast in the morning. It’s not like I am hungry in the morning anyway.” This is the WRONG way to think. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and starts up your metabolism. Not only is skipping a meal bad for your metabolism, starving yourself impacts the body in a harmful way; instead of losing weight you will gain it. What happens when you starve yourself is that your body goes into ‘survival mode.’ Your body begins to store the fat you already have and everything you eat converts to fat. Starving yourself will give you the opposite result you want.

4. Have a cheat day.

Diets don’t always have to be so restrictive. If you have the mindset of not eating any type of unhealthy food, it’s most likely not going to happen. I’ve experienced this first hand; within a week, I was craving junk food and gave in. So, the lesson is is to have what’s called a cheat day. Allow yourself to eat whatever you like. Now this doesn’t mean to go crazy like eating candy, chips, and cookies all day. Also, if you know you are going to go to an event or party, save your cheat day for that day because you will likely over eat and consume sugary items.

5. Be healthy for YOU.

Your purpose of working out and being fit should be for YOU. You shouldn’t look yourself in the mirror and have thoughts on what society would think of your body shape/size. As cliche as this sounds, it is so true- be yourself and not what someone else wants you to be. Your reason should not be “just to be skinny.” Your reason should be to want to make your body feel good by eating good/working out. Your reason should be to WANT to be healthy. So, stay active and be fit for the right reasons.
